Black History Month Fact – February 26th

The 15th Amendment Passes, Granting Black Men the Right to Vote.

Passed by the House of Representatives with a vote of 144 to 44 on February 26, 1869, and ratified February 3, 1870, the 15th amendment declared that the “right of citizens of the U.S. to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude…” Through its passing, the 15th Amendment granted Black men the right to vote which laid the foundation for Black citizens to hold significant influence in politics.
